EXCLUSIVE: Sheffield Wednesday plotting £1 MILLION bid to bring Macaulay Bonne to Hillsborough

After The Star revealed yesterday that Darren Moore retains an interest in bringing Charlton target man Jayden Stockley to the Owls, The Wednesday Blog now understands that Macaulay Bonne is another on the list of potential targets in the striking area, and for a staggering £1,000,000 transfer fee.

The two-cap Zimbabwe international, who notched 12 league goals last season for hometown club Ipswich, is understood to be open to a move back to the third tier this year, as QPR, having recently appointed ex-Aston Villa assistant Michael Beale as manager, would be interested in selling – for the right price. And what a price that would be for the 26-year old – a hefty £1 million that would engulf Sheffield Wednesday’s recent outlays, having been under some form of transfer embargo for 3 out of the past 5 seasons.

Bonne made 46 appearances for the Tractor Boys last season

But ambitious chairman Dejphon Chansiri is willing to splash the cash again this summer for the right man – with a flexible budget being set for Darren Moore’s men. Moreover, despite a relatively poor end to the season for the striker, The Wednesday Blog also understands that Ipswich are keen on bringing Bonne back to East Anglia, so an intriguing bidding war could develop between two of the division’s biggest hitters, both of whom will be no doubt targeting automatic promotion for the upcoming campaign.

Having already watched some League One rivals, like Bolton and the aforementioned Ipswich enter business, Sheffield Wednesday are preparing to enter the market as soon as possible. Conversations have taken place with free agent Jack Tucker and Plymouth midfielder Panutsche Camara amongst others, with Moore’s biggest priorities being centre-half, wing-backs, a tough-tackling midfielder should Australian international Luongo reject a new contract, at least one new goalkeeper, depending on the futures of both League Two promotion-winner Cameron Dawson and Joe Wildsmith, and adding some serious firepower up front, as evidenced by this interest in Macaulay Bonne, and other reported interest in Michael Smith, Jayden Stockley and Freddie Ladapo.

It is unclear whether Luongo will be staying at S6

Regardless, it will prove to be another summer of change at Hillsborough, as Moore attempts to fine-tune his squad and find a formula that will not only secure play-offs, but potentially go one step further into the top 2.
